The most fundamental choice in bag packaging is machine orientation: vertical (VFFS) or horizontal (HFFS, also called flow wrapper). The wrong choice wastes money on a machine that cannot run your product efficiently — or cannot run it at all.

The Core Difference

Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS): film is pulled vertically over a forming collar, shaped into a tube, sealed at the bottom, filled from above, then sealed and cut at the top. Gravity helps fill the product.

Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal (HFFS / Flow Wrapper): film is wrapped around the product as it moves horizontally on an infeed conveyor. The product is placed on the film, the film is folded over it, and the ends are sealed and cut.

The physical difference drives everything: VFFS drops product down; HFFS wraps product lying down.

Rule of thumb: if your product flows (powder, granule, liquid), use VFFS. If your product is a solid object that sits flat, use HFFS.

HFFS is generally faster for solid items because the wrapping motion is continuous — there is no “stop and fill” cycle. VFFS speed is limited by how long it takes to fill the bag.

Bag Styles

VFFS produces:

  • Pillow bags (most common, lowest cost)
  • Gusseted bags (stand-up with a bottom gusset)
  • Stick packs and sachets (multi-lane)
  • Bags with a bottom fold or top hang-hole

HFFS produces:

  • Fin-seal packages (crimped ends, like a candy bar wrapper)
  • Lap-seal packages (overlapping seal, uses less film)
  • Modified atmosphere packs (with gas flush)
  • Tray-ready wraps (shrink-tight around a tray)

VFFS machines are typically 15–30% cheaper than equivalent HFFS machines because the mechanical architecture is simpler. However, the total line cost may be similar when you add the multihead weigher (VFFS) or product infeed system (HFFS).

How to Decide

Ask these four questions in order:

  1. Does my product flow? (powder, granule, liquid) → VFFS
  2. Is my product a solid object? (bar, biscuit, hardware) → HFFS
  3. Is my product fragile? (chips, cookies, bread) → HFFS (gentler handling) or VFFS with specialized drop handling
  4. Do I need multi-lane small packs? (sachets, stick packs) → VFFS multi-lane
